KU hosts an IP rights capacity-building event for professors
The University of Karachi‘s Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization recently conducted a two-day workshop focused on enhancing faculty capacity in Intellectual Property (IP) Rights at the KU Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium.
During the inaugural session, Professor Dr. S. M. Tariq Rafi, Chairman of the Sindh Higher Education Commission, highlighted the workshop’s significance in raising awareness among faculty and scholars about the legal protection IP Rights offer to their research endeavors. He urged attendees to delve deeper into understanding the responsibilities, prospects, and challenges associated with IP Rights.
Dr. Tariq Rafi emphasized the efforts by the provincial HEC to bridge the gap between academia and businesses. This initiative aims to retain talent within universities and safeguard their products through IP Rights. He stressed the need for further legislative measures in this regard.
Meanwhile, Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, Vice Chancellor of KU, noted the university’s proactive approach in involving field experts at the departmental level and adjusting curricula based on industry insights. He lamented the prevalent tendency in the country where departments and individuals often step into roles that aren’t theirs, neglecting their primary responsibilities. Dr. Iraqi highlighted the University of Karachi’s potential to provide tailored manpower to industries based on their specific needs.
