Gujrat, a town with ancient origins, is said to have been founded by Raja Bachan Pal, a Surajbansi Rajput. The original name of the city was Udanagri. General Cunningham and Captain H Mackenzie attribute the construction of the present walled city to Ali Khan, a Gujjar. Captain Mackenzie suggests that Rani Gujran, wife of Badr Sen, rebuilt the city. Gujrat served as a market and military base during the reign of Mughal king Akbar the Great.
During British rule, Gujrat became the district headquarters, encompassing the present district of Mandi Bahauddin. The town has a remarkable educational history, with the Zamindar Educational Association establishing a high school in 1921 and Zamindar College in 1937. The college drew students from various districts, making Gujrat the Khita-e-Yunan (part of Greece) of Punjab.
In 2003, the Punjab government, under Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, established the University of Gujrat (UOG) on land near the shrine of Saint Hafiz Muhamad Hayat from the Mughal period. The university aims to produce competent individuals with an entrepreneurial outlook, addressing both local and global challenges. Its mission includes contributing to the development of a knowledge economy, human capital, and vibrant communities through quality teaching and research innovations.
